We’ve always been big watermelon fans…partly because watermelons are so refreshingly tasty in the summertime, and often, a nickname for our Watterson family.

I do remember sitting on my grandmother’s back steps with the rest of my cousins in the summer time, eating watermelon and spitting the seeds in the garden. Granny always “toted one home”, as she called it, on Fridays, after sewing upholstery in the furniture factory. It’s a wonder there wasn’t a watermelon farm growing in Granny’s backyard. Simple pleasures and great memories.

With the approaching St. Patrick’s Day celebration comes memories of the Irish and their relevant Newport history. Newport was built on the backs of the Irish, from its grand architecture to the seasonal cleaning of the giant Waterford crystal chandeliers, and of course, the daily cooking which began in the early hours of every morning.

This is the famous Breakers estate, home of the Cornelius Vanderbilts, cornerstone example of the Gilded Age, built before income tax laws were passed. There are 30 rooms for the once mostly Irish servants on the third floor.

This fall, I got hooked on felting knitted hand bags and made two as gifts for our daughters.

Satisfied with the first tries, I’m planning to make more. These purses do save a lot of money, and we are lucky that we prefer unusual designs for handbags.

This is a pattern for one of them. It’s a large hobo handbag, lined and interlined with inside pockets and magnetic snap closure.

This is a great free  baby hat pattern for beginning knitters, it’s quick and easy. Also a terrific free pattern to knit lots of baby hats for charity.
