This is a great free baby hat pattern for beginning knitters, it’s quick and easy. Also a terrific free pattern to knit lots of baby hats for charity. With so many charities in need of infant hats: hospital maternity wards, women’s shelters, the homeless shelters, for those of you who do charity knitting, here’s an easy, quick baby hat pattern, it’s free and I’d better get to work myself. Winter’s coming again!
Mothers are so happy to get these cute little versatile hats that will last a while, long after the baby’s gone home from the hospital.
It’s an easy and quick pattern. A cute little hat, just awaiting baby’s arrival.
Instructions:
Use a 16″ size 9US or 5.5mm circular needle, a sport weight yarn and a worsted weight, 2 strands, and cast on 64 st, using the long tail method for a little stretch. Place marker at the beginning of the row and join, being careful not to twist the stitches. Then knit around for about 1.5 in. or 4.5cm or so.
Next row: decrease 8 st evenly around. Knit 56 st around until the measurement is 4.5 inches or 12cm long, including roll.
Next row: *K6, K2tog* around to end, dividing out on dp needles
Row 2 on dp’s: *K5, K2tog* around to end; Row 3: Knit around; Row 4: *Knit 4, K2tog* to end; Row 5: *K3, K2tog* to end; Row 6: Knit. Row 7: *Knit 2, K2tog* to end; Row 8: *K1, k2tog* to end; Row 9: K2tog around, 8 st. remain. K2tog again to 4 st and then 1 more to 3 st. Make an I-cord about 3-4 inches, and secure end through cord, tie cord in knot.
Finish with a crocheted edge. With the top of the hat facing your body, crochet with 2 fingering weight yarns at once. I used pink and white with a size G hook. SC, Ch2, skip knit st, SC, Ch2, skip knit st, around. Next round: as before but Ch3.
Finish off after round.
This hat is so versatile as it can be rolled down to fit a larger head, or older child. So it definitely lasts longer than a few months after the arrival of the baby. For even more free hat patterns, please visit knitnscribble here. Find more baby hat patterns here as well.

I was very taken with what 1 person can do to help these Mothers & babies feel special. I am not a knitter but hope that maybe in some way I will be able to help Conetta. Thank you Conetta for taking that one extra step.

Thank you Ethel, In response to the charity hat pattern posted for donations to Mt. Sinai Hospital in Chicago, I’m sure Conetta would definitely appreciate your kind words. I sure do. What a lovely gesture she has made for so many babies and mothers in Chicago.

Sharon, thanks for the nice comment about my artwork. You have a lovely blog here. I was just curious…you mentioned that you would love to commission a portrait of grandchildren. What keeps you from doing it? Depending on what kind of portrait you’re looking for, I may just happen to have a nice-knitting-grandmother-with-a-very-nice-blog discount just waiting to be used.
